About the STACK Question plugin for ILIAS

General Information

STACK Question for ILIAS is a premier open-source online assessment system tailored for mathematics and STEM education. Originally developed in 2004 and adapted for Moodle in 2012, it has since become widely adopted by educational institutions worldwide. The ILIAS version, developed since 2013 by SURLABS' CEO and currently maintained by the SURLABS team, includes features such as algebraic answer validation, customized feedback, and the creation of unlimited random question variants. It enables detailed skill assessment with multiple input fields and distinct validation and grading processes.

Documentation

STACK offers a comprehensive guide originally developed using the Moodle version of the plugin as its foundation. Remarkably, 95% of this guide's content is also applicable to the ILIAS version of the plugin.

AI generated Feedback

Creating a STACK question with detailed feedback can be a time-consuming task. Thankfully, AI can streamline this process for STACK creators. As demonstrated at SURLABS' presentation at the STACK Conference 2024, automatic feedback generation for STACK questions is now a reality. We are currently seeking partners to fund and further develop this groundbreaking feature.

STACK Questions in Moodle support blocks, a feature native to Moodle. However, integrating this functionality with STACK for ILIAS involves some development effort.

While SURLABS has enhanced the STACK author interface for free with versions 7.5 and 8.5, significant work remains to further improve the usability of this complex plugin for both ILIAS and Moodle.

Code editor mode

Some users have expressed a desire to edit CASText fields—complex mixes of various codes—using a dedicated code editor. We propose adding this option to the standard author interface for CASText fields and introducing a new author mode where question creators can edit the entire question as XML code. This mode would utilize the same code editor available for CASText in the standard interface.
